What is Shared Hosting? Benefits: Good pricing - Often $4 to $19/month Downsides: 1) You can get harmed when one website on the server became a "pig". 2) If you have a massive product launch, and you send 1000s of people to your site within a short period of time, you can basically "hog" all the system resources, and your web hosting company might have to shut you down. The reason is that you are sharing the server (computer) with probably 100 or more other web sites. If one website suddenly has a surge in demand, this can harm all the other sites on the same server. So whether you are the one that caused the harm, or affected by someone elses harm, this can be a pain. Forunately, it's a rare occurence that you may never need to worry about. I personally host all my websites except my shared shopping cart on "shared hosting". What is Dedicated Hosting?
Benefits: You control your own server. Downsides: 1) You need to be more technical or have your own technical staff. 2) You will have to decide how much disk, memory, bandwidth you want to buy 3) The cost might range from $79 to $299 (or more) per month. I have not tried a dedicated Linux or Unix site, but I do have a dedicated Windows 2003 server. I use Remote Desktop to connect to it, and I can logon and "drive" the machine, just as if I was sitting right in front of it.
